Description of AISI 4140 Alloy Steel Square Bar

AISI 4140 has high ductility and can be formed using conventional techniques in the annealed condition. Because of its toughness that is superior to any other plain carbon steels, it requires more pressure or force to forming it. AISI 4140 can be used for a wide variety of applications where greater toughness and wear resistance is needed over lower carbon grades. Typical applications include strippers, holder blocks, mold bases, and supporting tools.

FAQs

What are the key properties of AISI 4140 Alloy Steel?

AISI 4140 offers excellent fatigue resistance, good machinability, high tensile strength, and good resistance to wear and abrasion, especially after heat treatment.

Can AISI 4140 Alloy Steel be heat treated?

Yes, AISI 4140 is heat-treatable and can achieve a range of mechanical properties, such as high strength and hardness, through processes like quenching, tempering, and normalizing.

Is AISI 4140 Alloy Steel corrosion-resistant?

While AISI 4140 has moderate corrosion resistance, it is generally used in conditions where additional protection like plating or coating is required, especially in harsh environments.

How should AISI 4140 Alloy Steel be welded?

AISI 4140 can be welded using standard welding techniques (TIG, MIG, etc.), but preheating and post-weld heat treatment are recommended to minimize the risk of cracking and to maintain its mechanical properties.
