Zirconium Carbonitride Powder Description
Carbonitrides are manufactured through the carbothermal reduction and nitridation of zirconium oxide at high temperatures in a vacuum furnace. The material is then ground to achieve the required particle size distribution. The powder produced using this patented procedure has a spherical morphology and exceptionally narrow particle size distribution when compared with Zirconium Carbonitride Zr(C,N) produced from zirconium metal.

Zirconium Carbonitride Powder Typical Applications
Carbonitrides are the raw material for producing cermets, a metal-ceramic composite similar to hard metal that exhibits high hardness, excellent resistance to oxidation, high wear resistance and good toughness.
Cermets are used as tools for machining metals. Just like classic WC-Co hard metals, cermets also require special additives such as Mo2C, TaC, NbC and, in special cases, WC. These additives can also be manufactured in the form of solid solution mixed crystals with titanium carbonitride.
In combination with Al2O3, Zr(C,N) offers an extremely wear-resistant cutting ceramic for machining e.g. cast iron.
